WCG Trip: Shrewsbury to Welshpool and Powis Castle

09:30 Sunday August 13 2023

Current Participants: 2 space(s) available

The ride will be just over 55 miles long with 2,725 ft of climbing.  A grade B ride in terms of hills and distance, but the pace will be that of a C ride, maybe a bit slower (perhaps walking pace) on some hills.  Don’t worry too much about the distance, the gradients, or the speed; we have all day to complete the ride and expect to take 7 or 8 hours to cover the 55 miles.  We will ride as a group and won’t leave anyone behind.

The route goes out to the West of Shrewsbury along NCR 81 with a first stop in Crew Green.  After Crew Green we start the first tough climb of 400 feet in under a mile (!) and after a brief respite, the second big climb of 700 ft over 3 miles.  Then on to Welshpool and up to either Powis Castle or the Fuel Stop at Welshpool Airport for lunch.  After lunch we will head South East through Kingswood and then turn back East towards Shrewsbury across the relatively flat, but still lumpy, roads of Shropshire.  There is a dearth of cafes on the way back, so we plan to stop at the Plough Inn for coffee and a cake or buy snacks at the Co-op in Pontesbury and eat them by the village green.  Then back to Shrewsbury along NCR 44.

Here is the route on Komoot: West to Welshpool and Powis Castle and on Garmin Connect: Shrewsbury to Welshpool and Powis Castle
