This is ride is open to all members of the group, but is also suitable for people who have not previously ridden with a cycling group, so that they can get experience of riding with a group and so we can assess their requirements and advise them on how to continue.

Don't worry that you haven’t ridden in a group before, there is nothing difficult; we will explain what we do and how riding in a group is different from riding on your own before we start.  And in particular, don’t be concerned about the pace of the ride and not being able to keep up; the ride leader will adjust the pace of the ride to suit the group as we go along.  And we always have an official back marker; so no one will get left behind.

Before the ride, check out the page on our website about taking part in one of our rides "Taking Part", and take a look at the Advice from Cycling UK on riding in a group.  If you are new to riding with a group, please arrive 15 minutes before the advertised start time, so that the ride leader can brief you on how to ride safely with a group of other riders.

Newcomers Ride from New Brighton

      Before you join the ride please make sure that your bicycle is safe and roadworthy GCN’s 6 Checks Before You Ride and that you have read Cycling UK’s advice on riding in a group .

      On the day we suggest that you should bring:

      • wet weather wear and warm clothing
      • a spare inner tube, a pump  and tyre levers
      • some food and drink to keep you going
      • money for emergencies (and possibly lunch)
      • a mobile phone
      • and that you should carry details of your address and an emergency telephone contact number, just in case.

      Distance The route is 26 miles in total, at a Grade D pace (See website for ride grade details), 15 miles to lunch (Thurstaston visitors centre) and 11 miles back along the North Wirral Coast to New Brighton.

      Meeting place the ride will start from in front of the Floral Pavillion New Brighton at 10:00.

      Ride Leader The ride leaders will be Peter Williams and Jill McNamee and they will be at the start from 9.45.  We aim to be back at New Brighton between 13:30 and 14:00.

      Obstacles The route is fairly flat, bit of an uphill off the promenade by Egromont Ferry. Arrowe Brook Lane, Greasby; again is a long slope requiring you to select a lower gear.

      Rest break Our first short break (5 – 10 min) will be after 7 miles at the Pasture Road, Moreton, time for a drink and a quick banana snack.  We plan to stop for a lunch break at approximately (15 Miles) that is at Wirral Country Park  overlooking the Dee estuary.  Bring your own sandwiches and a drink, or pick up something from one of the two cafe’s next to the park (Whistle Stop Cafe or Flissy Coffee Shop). The final stop before we return to New Brighton will be along the North Wirral shore at Meols 21 miles.

      Hazards Riding a bicycle on public roads is inherently a risk, you can mitigate those risks by being aware of other road users and anticipating their likely actions.

      Trains There is a frequent rail service on the Merseyrail Wirral Line, should you wish to leave the ride early, so I would advise you to bring money for both your lunch and the train should you choose to use them.
