      Addendum:

Please note, the start time will probably be just after 1000am.  i.e trains to James Street may be delayed and there is no need to rush from James Street to Pier Head!    Also, the ride will now go round Frodsham on Route 5, (no need to cycle on the busy main road).  Looks like a hot day!!

I assume cyclists will have a Merseyrail Pass or relevant Saveaway Pass. Hence trains can be taken from Eastham Rake (09:31), Leasowe (09:31) or New Brighton (09:36), or Mersey Ferry (09:40).

Leaving Pier Head, we set off south towards Otterspool promenade and onto Grassendale. Then, cycle up to Aigburth Road, turn right, then left (keeping to St Mary’s Road) and through Garston village. At the 2nd set of traffic lights, turn right, past St Michael’s Church, and bear right then left to reach Garston Shore Road. Cycling away from the river, take the second right, then right at the roundabout and left along Hale Road, past All Saints Church. Turning left but still on Hale Road, cycle to Hale village. We are now on the TPT (Trans-pennine Trail). At Hale village, there is an optional visit to the Childe of Hale statue and Hale Lighthouse.

From Hale village, continue east and following the TPT, turn right into Pickering Pastures. Continuing on the TPT, we cycle towards the old Runcorn Bridge, including one section where we have to carry our bikes up a hill/staircase (at Ditton brook). Go under the Bridge and immediately turn left, up a residential street and access the bridge after approximately 200m. Cross the bridge and follow the Runcorn Cycle Way to Halton Lea.

The marked cycle track initially follows the B5155 in a south east direction. However, the route is difficult to follow! crossing over the A533 twice, the main railway and the M56. After Halton Lea, signs point to Beechwood (and later on, there is a sign for Runcorn Holiday Inn).

We arrive at the A56 at Sutton Weaver. Turn right, over the Weaver Navigation, and cycle through Frodsham. This is a busy road. There will be a short stop in Frodsham. Coming out of Frodsham, we turn left along the B5393 and cycle uphill to Alvanley. Turning left, we cycle towards Mouldsworth, then, after 2 miles, turn right, towards Dunham Heath. Turning right, we end up at Dunham on the Hill and back on the A56, before turning left for the café stop at Café Fresh on the main road.

      32 miles

Carrying on along the A56 for 2 miles, we turn right at Mickle Trafford, then head to Picton Gorse and left to Upton Heath. Cross over the main road, A41, to Bache Merseyrail station.

      6 miles

Note, There is an option to carry on the ride, maybe along the Greenway towards Neston, or on to Birkenhead, or maybe to complete the “Mersey Loop”.

Bookings no longer allowed on this date.
