Pier Head to Southport

10:30 Wednesday June 9 2021

Current Participants: 1 space(s) available

The ride is open to all members of the Wirral Cycling Group and to anyone who has been on one of our newcomers’ rides

You must not join a ride if you or anyone in your household is experiencing any of the Covid-19 symptoms or if you have been advised to self-isolate

The ride will be led by Steve Whittaker and will start at 10:30 from the Pier Head in Liverpool.  On Wednesday mornings trains arrive at James Street Station from West Kirby at 10:13, from New Brighton at 10:17 and from Hooton at  10:10 and 10:24.  Currently (with the reduced service) the Mersey Ferry leaves Woodside at 09:40 and gets to the Pier Head terminal at 09:50.  The return trip leaves the Pier Head every hour after 10:00 am.

The ride will go out along the river side and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to Litherland, then along the coastal route through Crosby, Hightown, Formby and Ainsdale-on-Sea to Southport, before heading back to Ainsdale Station, a distance of about 30 miles.  The route includes two miles between Freshfields and the Coastal Road at Ainsdale that is ‘off-road’ but the gravel surface is relatively good.  We would recommend a Hybrid rather than a Road bike for the section along the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

There will be an optional cafe stop at Ainsdale village, on the way to Southport, at Mycycle cafe.

Steve will then ride the 18 miles return to Liverpool if anyone wants to join him, but riders can catch the train at Southport, Ainsdale, or Waterloo railway stations if they prefer.

Bookings no longer allowed on this date.
