(C) Liverpool to Downholland Cross vis Ainsdale

10:00 Sunday April 19 2026

Current Participants: 11 space(s) available

38 miles, Grade C, very flat, with a section of just under two miles on good quality gravel tracks through Formby Woods, another two miles on the better (tarmac) surfaced part of the Cheshire lines path and two sections (4.5 miles and 1.5 miles) on the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool canal.

John Hampson, the ride leader, will be at the Pier Head by 09:45 for a 10:00 start.

The route goes out north past the Prince’s Dock then along Waterloo Road to Eldon and beside the Leeds Liverpool canal as far as Waterloo, along Marine Terrace through Brighton-le-Sands and along side Crosby Beach on the coastal path, where we will stop for a break.  Then on to Hightown,  to Formby and out along the footpath from Freshfield to the level crossing at Fisherman’s Path to go through Formby Woods to the outskirts of Ainsdale.  Turning East to country lanes with open views of the fields all the way to Downholland Cross and lunch at the Canalside Country Cafe.

The return route skirts around Maghull with a 2-mile section of the Cheshire Lines path, through Sefton, with another short section on the Leeds Liverpool canal, before turning into the Rimrose Valley Park and then back through some of the more “picturesque” parts of North Liverpool: Seaforth, Bootle, Bank Hall and Vauxhall, before returning to the Pier Head.
