A grade C ride of 42 miles starting from outside Headbolt Lane railway station at 10:00 and travelling through Rainford and Billinge to the start of the Sankey Valley at Carrs Mill. After a brief stop for a break at Carrs Mill, we will travel the length of the Sankey Valley park (15 miles) all the way to Spike Island in Widnes, where people can have lunch at the West Bank Boat Club’s café or eat their own sandwiches sitting by the canal outside.
We will then make our way through Hough Green, Whiston, and Kirby back to Headbolt Lane railway station where the ride will finish, hopefully between 15:00 and 15:30. Here is a copy of the full route on Komoot: Sankey Valley from Headbolt Lane You can download a GPX file for Garmin from Komoot.
John Hampson, the ride leader, will be at Headbolt Lane railway station by 09:45. The train from Liverpool takes about 20 minutes and arrives at Headbolt Lane at 09:26 or 09:56.
There are just a few small hills on the route on mainly quiet roads. Over half the route is on cycle tracks, which are generally made of compressed gravel (similar to the Wirral Way), but John has covered the route on a road bike with 23mm tyres, after a lot of rain, without any issues.
