The ride begins at 10:00 by the starting point of the Way of the Roses on the promenade at Morecambe. Please be at the start by 09:45.
This is an absolutely delightful ride to end our weekend in Morecombe. It is a mixture of cycling along the promenade, beautiful canal paths, superb countryside and back along the promenade to the starting point. Yes, there are some inclines, but nothing too onerous.
The route goes out North East along the promenade and then we pick up the Lancaster Canal through Hest Bank and Bolton-le-Sands all the way to the outskirts of Carnforth. Then alongside the River Kerr and back into Carnforth. If you haven’t already seen it, a Brief Encounter at the station is worth a quick look. Our banana break will take place either in the countryside before Carnforth, or in Carnforth itself.
Then we back to Lancaster via Nether Kellet. Our lunch stop will be at the Courtyard Cafe at St John’s Hospice. The food is great and there’s a tiny souvenir shop if you have any spare cash! Thereafter we pass through Lancaster to Middleton and to Heysham. Heysham is a lovely little town. We can either stop for a cup of tea there (cafe or pie shop on the Main Street in Heysham) or just head up to St Peter’s Church to check out the views from the Graveyard. The route finishes with a short run up the coastal cycle path back to Morecambe.
A Grade D ride of 26 miles at an average speed of 10 mph. We won’t leave anyone behind, but will stop occasionally to admire the view, and allow everyone to catch up. The ride is on good quality surfaces (I’ll be on a road bike).
