Chester to Wrenbury to Whitchurch to Marbury to Chester

    53 miles

    Grade B

Meet at Chester Railway Station at 1000am.

    Strava: https://strava.app.link/8HoOT0VKupb

The route follows the National Cycle Route 45 (with a few tweaks) from Chester to Whitchurch and back. We are meeting at Chester Station, outside. I expect to arrive at 0926am, but will wait for the next train, 0956am, to arrive.

Note, from the Strava route, it is 53 miles and there are a few hills to encounter at Burwardsley and Harthill. The route is on roads, except the short spell on the canal tow path between Chester and Christleton.

Leaving Chester, we follow the NR 45 along the canal to Christleton. We then continue on the NR 45 to Waverton, Hargrave, Tattenhall, Burwardsley and Harthill. We then cross over the A534 and head for Cholmondley Castle. At this point, we carry on along the same road, cross over the A49 (past the Cholmondley pub) and, picking up the NR 45 again, we cycle to Wrenbury. Crossing over the (Llangollen) canal, we take the first right and head to Whitchurch. On the way, we will come across a statue of an Anglo Saxon warrior – showing we are on the “Mercian Way”.

We will stop at a Café in Whitchurch. Provisionally we will stop at Café Eleven or maybe Sainsbury’s café.

After lunch, we cycle past St Alkmund’s church, cross the main road and head north-east along Alport Road and Mile Bank Road to Marbury. Keeping straight on, we head to Swanwick Green, cross over the A49, and onto Bickley and back to Cholmondley Castle.

We then re-trace our route to Harthill, but then keep straight on and cycle downhill (past Bolesworth Castle), to Tattenhall. We then re-trace our route to Chester.

Bookings no longer allowed on this date.
