24 miles, Grade D: Port Sunlight to Thurstaston and Gayton

This is a D+ ride, being a short distance at 24 miles total (14 to the Whistle Stop Café) but with some uphill riding involved. The full ride includes a three mile stretch of the Wirral Way.

Setting off from Port Sunlight we will cycle along Townfield Lane and two sides of Bebington Cemetrey and via Higher Bebington, eventually reaching Storeton Road. From there we will descend Waterpark Road to Prenton Hall Road and cross over Woodchurch Road to work our way down to the River Fender. Crossing the River Fender we will begin a long, gentle ascent of the second of the two ridges that run down the Wirral, skirting the Woodchurch Estate and cycling up Landican Lane, at the top of which we will take a short break.

Continuing towards Irby, we will then cut through to Mill Hill Road and cycle via Irby Mill to Royden Park, turning left to climb the gentler side of Montgomery Hill. Then begins a descent to Caldy where the ride joins the Wirral Way. A one mile stretch of the Wirral Way will take us to our lunch destination – The Whistle Stop Café at Thurstaston.

The return route (for those returning to Port Sunlight) adds another 2 miles of the Wirral Way before taking on Delavor Road. The way back will then take us through Gayton, Leighton, The Runnell and Thornton Hough, continuing along Neston Road and crossing the M53 to go past Claremont Farm. It is then a short distance to return to Port Sunlight.
