The ride starts from the Pier Head in Liverpool and goes out via the side of the river and across to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal to Litherland, then along the coastal route through Crosby, Hightown, Formby and Ainsdale-on-Sea to Southport, before heading back to Ainsdale Station, a distance of about 30 miles. The route includes two miles between Freshfields and the Coastal Road at Ainsdale that is ‘off-road’ but the gravel surface is relatively good. We would recommend a Hybrid rather than a Road bike for the section along the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
Lunch is at My Cycle cafe in Ainsdale village, on the way to Southport.
The return trip to Liverpool is 18 miles long but riders can catch the train at Southport, Ainsdale, or Waterloo railway stations if they prefer.
