This is a grade C ride of 40 miles starting at the Pier Head in Liverpool and travelling to Halton Castle for lunch (with a fabulous view – Drone above Halton Castle) and then on to finish at Chester Railway Station. The route passes the only four Millennium mileposts in Liverpool.
The route goes out past the entrance to the Albert Dock (1st Millennium milepost), then past the bus station onto Hanover Street (2nd Millennium milepost), up Duke Street to the Anglican Cathedral, down Windsor Street to Princes Park (3rd Millennium milepost), through Sefton Park (4th and last Millennium milepost), up NCR 56 to Allerton and Childwall and onto the Liverpool Loop Line, where we stop for a quick snack. Then down the Liverpool Loop Line to Halewood, through Hale Bank and Ditton, and across the Runcorn Bridge. Then alongside the Bridgewater Canal to Phoenix Park and up to Halton Castle for lunch in the beer garden of the Castle Hotel. The beer garden is the grounds of Halton Castle and has superb views over the Mersey Valley and the Peckforton and Welsh Hills.
The return trip goes back through Town Park and Brookvale to Sutton Weaver, then through Frodsham and up a steep hill (150ft in 1/2 mile) to Helsby, then on up towards Manley and on to Mickle Trafford, finishing along the Greenway to Chester, where you can get a Merseyrail train back to the Wirral; or cycle home under your own power.
